Get out and walk
Oct 13 '00
Do you know what the long, flat horizontal things are at the ends of your legs? You know, those things you use to push the gas pedal, brake and clutch? I'm talking about your feet. Did you know that you don't have to be in a car to to use your feet to get somewhere? I'm talking about walking.
Sure, you walk across the parking lot to your car. You walk in the mall or the store. But, I'm talking about really walking.
I'm no stranger to walking. Up until a couple of years ago, my wife and I shared one car, and for a period of time before we married, I had no car at all. As a result, I did my share of walking and riding the bus.
Walking is good exercise, and the perfect complement to any weight loss plan... we hear that all the time from doctors and fitness experts. After all, our bodies were designed to get from one place to another by means of bipedal locomotion. However, I'd like to say that I think walking is also excellent for the spirit.
Walking gives you a chance to slow things down a bit and take life, literally, one step at a time. Walking puts you into touch with the world around you. You see things you might miss when driving. You feel the wind and know which direction it is blowing. You'll see insects and birds going about their daily routine. You'll also have the peace of mind of knowing that you can get places under your own power.
The Buddhists speak of meditation as a way to rejuvenate the spirit. There is a whole art to "walking meditation," in fact. You don't have to be Buddhist to experience this. Just get out and walk. The next time you have a chance to walk instead of drive, give it a try.
This past week my wife's car has been in the shop so she's been driving my truck. I get dropped off and picked up from work. During lunch, I've been walking nearly a mile to the local Burger King, and a mile back. I'm able to fit this entire lunch, including the round trip walk into an hour. I believe that there's always a positive experience to be had regardless of the circumstances. In my case, being without a vehicle during my lunch hours has caused me to remember just how great it is to just get out and walk.
My next walking goal? I think I'll pick a nice day in the spring or summer and walk to work and back. Round trip: 20 miles! Perhaps doing this once a year would be a fun thing to do.
