Eating right is a life long choice

Jun 15 '00

I worked at a weight management company as a counselor for
3 years. I counseled all sorts of people who wanted to
lose weight for all types of reasons. Some for their
health, some due to peer pressure, some due to pregnancy,
and other various reasons. The bottom line is that you
have to find out what works for you and what you can
live with for a lifetime. Weight control is not a month
long thing, it's for life.

I have seen patterns in people and have seen what is
successful in most cases and what is not. The number
one factor is portion control.

Most people can consume all types of food as long as
they eat it in moderation. Ice cream and donuts are
fine once in a while if you have a small cup of ice
cream or just 1 donut. Portion control is important
with healthy foods as well. If you have a snack of
fat free pretzels yet you eat 60 of them, that will
put on weight. Many people think that since a product
is low fat, such as Snackwell's oatmeal cookies,
that they can eat 8 cookies in a sitting. Well,
each cookie is 50 calories, that is a big snack.

Another successful tip is to exercise. It is obvious
how exercise benefits all of us, but so few people
do it while attempting to lose weight. When eating
right, you are reducing your calorie intake, but you
are not burning fat or calories. With exercise, you
are burning off pounds as well as helping your heart
health, increasing your energy, looking better, upping
your self esteem, etc.

Another helpful hint is to write down what you eat
each day for an entire week. Each bite or drink you
put in your mouth, write it down. Get a small calorie
counting book and see how much you are really consuming
in one day. It will amaze you how many calories
add up that you aren't aware of.

Keep healthy snacks in the house and get rid of the
bad foods! If you don't have ice cream in your freezer,
you can't eat it. I like to keep cut up vegi's and fruits
in my fridge. I have airpopped popcorn, pretzels, bread
sticks, non-fat yogurt, etc.. in my home so I have many
choices when I have cravings. It does take more time
to cut up the produce or read the labels at the grocery
store, but it is well worth it when you see the pounds
dissapear.

Another thing is to lose weight for yourself. If you
are losing it for another person or for an event, it
will be hard to keep it off for good and maintain
a healthy lifestyle. It's good to have an upcoming
wedding as a motivation to lose pounds, but what
happens after the wedding is over?

Weight maintenance should be a life long goal that
makes you feel better about yourself.

Good luck!
