Ediets.com for Health
Oct 03 '00
Note: I'm putting this review of Ediets.com in the healthy weight loss category mainly because there isn't a listing for Ediets anywhere else on Epinions. If one does open, I'll move this opinion there.
Anyone who's visited a health inspired website in the past year or so is bound to have seen an advertisement for Ediets.com. It's usually a banner at the top of the webpage, and will more than likely say something along the lines of "Lose 10 pounds by .... (fill in a date, about a month away). After seeing the advertisement several times I finally gave in and went to the website to fill out my free diet analysis.
The analysis is pretty straightforward. They ask the basic questions such as height, weight, level of activity, etc. Then they give you a VERY basic idea of what your plan will be like, and invite you to join the program. I must have filled out the diet analysis three or four times before I actually joined.
When you first join the site can be a little overwhelming. There's just so many different things for you to look at. I'll focus on the main aspects of the site.
1. There's a "my plan" section where you can specify what type of plan you want to follow. There's an all recipe based plan, all convienence food plan, or a combination of the two to choose from. You can also specify if you are already on any special diets (such as low sodium), if you are vegetarian or vegan (which impressed me), or if you simply don't like to eat red meat, seafood, ect.
2. From there you can move on to the "meal plan" section. There you will find a meal plan for the upcoming week. If you see a meal that you don't think you will like, you can click on it and will be taken to a list of other meals that you can substitute. All recipe based meals are easy, and come with a recipe to follow. They also have a list of alternatives for the convienence foods in case you don't like them or can't find the particular product in your area. They also offer a shopping list that you can print out. It contains everything that you will need to follow your food plan for the week.
3. There's a community section, which mostly consists of message boards and organized chats. The message boards are great for finding a new diet buddy, motivation, advice, or new recipes.
4. There is also an exercise area, which I didn't use as I was already following an exercise program. But they give details as to what sort of exercises you should be following to see results.
5. There is a live area where you can ask Ediets personnel questions about anything from technical support, to dieting questions. There are also scheduled chats with the dieticians that work with ediets, usually about once a week.
From what I've seen Ediets is a healthy eating plan. They promote healthy eating, exercise, and getting in enough water every day. Pretty much all of the components of a healthy diet. What I liked about Ediets is that they've already figured out the calorie and fat content of each meal, all you have to do is eat what's on your list. You don't have to worry about counting calories, etc. But that brings me to what I didn't like about Ediets. I grew tired of not being able to make choices for what I was going to eat (true, you can substitute other foods, but that takes the ease out of not having to worry about counting calories). Also, I felt that the vegetarian plan involved too much pasta, which was disappointing. Not all vegetarians love Italian food! *S*
This is a healthy diet, and I know several people who have done well with it and have lost weight, it just didn't suit my lifestyle. I'd recommend it to anyone who would like having their meal plans laid out on a weekly basis.
