Finding Strength from Others
Jul 23 '00
When I graduated from high school I was about 100 lbs overweight. About a month before I started my freshman year of college I decided to start losing weight. I cut out a lot of fattening foods, started walking the dog every day, and made a firm commitment to losing weight. About the same time that I started this lifestyle change I also had access to the internet for the first time. While browsing the net one day I stumbled across a weight loss email support group. I figured that I should give it a try, and joined. Almost immediately I realized how much I enjoyed having these people to talk to. It was different than talking to people in real life - I guess not being able to see each other's faces it was easier to express how you were feeling and talk about your problems. There wasn't that fear of the person judging you.
Being in this group I learned a lot about weight loss that I had never heard before. I was introduced to the need to drink at least 60oz of water a day for the first time. We exchanged various recipes that were healthy and delicious. I learned to be able to discuss with others why I had the eating problems that I did. And all through this each and every person on the email list was supportive and offered advice when needed.
All in all I have lost about 70 lbs, and still have somewhere around 20 to go. I don't think that I could have ever gotten where I am now without the support I recieved from all of those wonderful people. I'd also like to think that I offered support to some of them too.
