Let me count the years.

I started smoking in 1967. Dancing, smoking, and drinking with my friends. I remember there were no problems ever buying cigarettes, vending machines were everywhere.
Growing up in Germany, the cigarettes cost about 1 Mark, I think, which wasn't bad. Then, I started working on the American Air Force/Army Base. That's when cigarettes got cheap, and I started smoking more. I think it was because it was cheap and it can make you feel like a grown-up.
The I met my husband, he smoked 2 packs a day, and I smoked 1 pack a day.
When I came to the United States, cigarettes were still very cheap, and I just kept smoking. I was also self-employed at that time, and I could smoke any time I wanted to.
Then, I had something strange happen to me. It was 1993 and I was at work. All of a sudden, my nose started bleeding. At fist it was just a little, then it was a lot. I wound up in the emergency room and they put me into the hospital. I had to stay there for three days. They told me that I had high blood pressure.
The scariest thing I ever saw was when the doctor had me smoke a cigarette. Then, he showed me how much my blood pressure jumped up after the cigarette.
That made my decision right then and there. I quit smoking! No patches, no support groups, and no other dependencies that I would need to get rid of later.
I would love to encourage all people, especially young teenagers, never
start smoking. And, I would like to encourage all current smokers to quit.
A thing that I find very scary is the people on oxygen masks in order to live "comfortably" not being able to breath from smoking. I go to casinos and I see a lot of people, young and old, men and women, hooked to a portable oxygen tank trying to breath comfortably. Then, they light up a cigarette and start coughing.
We live in a society that we know better now! Cigarettes are bad for you! So why then, do so many people ignore the obvious.
Gee, just think how much money you could save if you stopped immediately. If my husband and I still smoked today, it would cost us close to $10 a day. Glad we got that monkey of our back!
