Amen and Finally

Nov 21 '00

I've written in the past about my weight loss problems. I have given birth to a total of five children. The pregnancies were back to back with the first being a multiple gestation. Post partum depression among other things contributed to the weight staying on for months and eventually years.

Finally, I got tired of complaining about it and decided to do some something. I tried diet after diet. I had a horrible experience with a so called diet doctor. I half heartedly tried exercise-some days going one hour straight on an exercise bike then skipping the next few days completely.

I just out gave up again. Nothing was working and I reasoned that this is just my new body and I must accept it. Maybe giving up was the best thing i could have done. I stop obsessing about every bite I took. After about a month, food became a non issue. I hadn't gained an ounce and I was eating when I was hungry. I did replace some of my standards with lower or no fat versions of the original products. Milk became non fat, mayo went to low fat, and salad dressings went to low calorie. On the whole I did this because it was an easy thing to change about my families eating habits-if my children don't develop the taste for these highly fatty things now, maybe they never will.

I,of course, kept the habit of drinking water at least 8 times daily. I feel better when I do this one simple task. On my tombstone my family can write "She always drank her 8 glasses of water a day".

I started to walk my dog every day, twice a day. I have found the key to exercise is exercising consistently. The fresh air helped my attitude better than any prescription ever could. getting this exercise gave me more energy in a day and I eventually did find time to get back on my bike. I soon noticed my jeans were fitting better. I knew the cardio exercises were doing their job but the time had come to tone up the excess flesh.

Leg lifts, stomach crunches and the like have never been my favorite things in life. But, for once in a long time, I had the energy and will to do them. My stomach and other problem areas have been gradually decreasing in size.

I have come to the conclusion no diet will ever work unless you are willing to totally change your lifestyle. I am not nor will I ever be able to give up my comfort foods. Depriving yourself of your favorite things only make you want them more and overdo it when you finally get the forbidden food.

To most people, the conclusions I stumbled upon ar totally common sense. The media and weight loss gurus have brainwashed a good percentage of my generation to believe we need all these extras and their help to loss weight. We simply don't. I have lost over 20 pounds without them and if I can do anyone can.
