| Cleavenger's Full Review: GE Dehumidifier AHG25LA |
We've used the GE Dehumidifier (model #AHG25) for 2 seasons and it really does a good job. Ours is located in the basement to help remove the dampness that accumulates during the warmer months.
What this unit does, is pulls water out of the air and it accumulates in the bucket that is located in the back. You able to remove the collected water by pulling out the bucket and dumping it outside or down the drain. There is control that dips down into the bucket that detects when it is full and turns off the dehumidifier to keep it from overflowing. Alight will come on to let you know the bucket is full and needs emptied. The bucket also has a hole that you can hook a hose to so that the bucket is always being emptied into the drain. Of course, you have to have a way for the water to be run into the drain. We don't have a drain available to do that, but would be a great feature if you were able to do so. Also, the dehumidifier has 2 fan speeds that you can choose from.
There is also a control on the front that lets you set the humidistat where you want to keep the humidity level in the room. Once the desired humidity is reached, simply turn the control back until the unit turns off. From that time on, it will kick on and off as needed.
When the unit runs all day, I'll have to go down and empty the bucket only once. Actually, the company states that it will collect 3 gallons a day. The unit also includes an automatic defrost control (for when the frost builds up on the coils) as well as a washable air filter. The air filter needs cleaned, by rinsing with water, about every month. Another minor feature of the dehumidifier is the casters on the bottom that help when moving it around the room. Granted they don't roll all that smoothly, but they do the job.
The unit doesn't run all the quietly, but I don't hear it too much since we have it located in our basement. I would NOT want it running in the upstairs portion because it would drive me insane. I can't say that I've ever heard a quiet dehumidifier before, so this is to be expected.
GE has included a full one-year warranty, and a limited additional 4-year warranty on the compressor, and will repair or replace in-home free on the covered items.
Before we used this humidifier, our basement was damp and we had trouble with mildew as well. Now as soon as the humidity starts to climb we get it out and get it going. Since then, we haven't had any problem with those issues, and no problem with the unit either.
