A Gym is A Gym, right? WRONG!

Jul 13 '00

I think exercise should be about being healthy and having fun. In my time here on Earth, I have lost a significant amount of money on gym memberships. This fact convinced me that not everyone thinks the way I do. However, I have realized that there are ways to tell if a gym is for you before you sign on the dotted line.

What do you want out of the gym?

If you are going to join a gym, you need to figure out what it is that you want out of a gym. Do you want a gym that caters to a particular sex? There are gyms for men only or women only. If you are a little cautious about being seen in workout clothes, this might be for you. Do you want a particular piece of equipment? I am very partial to an elliptical machine. There are only two gyms in my area that offer that piece of equipment. That narrows the search greatly. If you want someone to keep you motivated, look for gyms that your friends belong to.

What do you need from a gym?

Joining a gym for the first time can be a daunting task. You should always look for a gym that offers you a chance to try it out first. I love to use a gym for at least a week before I decide. If you are looking to lose weight or really get fit, you should look for one that offers you a personal trainer. Some gym offer trainers, but you pay extra fees. Find out in advance about any extra fees.If you have children, you should consider if they offer child care. Once again find out if there is an extra fee for child care. You should also consider the price versus the services offered. If you are not going to use the services, opt for a cheaper gym. Do not pay for something you will not use. Be honest with yourself. If you have never liked step aerobics, you probably are not going to at your new gym. However, if you like the variety of aerobics, kickboxing, and other classes, you should probably find one that offers those services to you.

Think Big Picture

If you have an active family, you may want to consider a place that offers something for the whole family. My all time favorite gym membership was at the YMCA. I had the use of a state of the art gym, a personal trainer(free of charge), a pool, and child care. My children were able to enjoy activities and classes. I paid a small enrollment fee and then the monthly dues. However, there was no contract. When the army moved us, that was that. If you are single they have reduced rates. If you are lower income, they offer scholarships and other options to help reduce the burden. The YMCA operates under the belief that everyone should have a place to go. I think this was a great option for me and my family. There are many types of clubs and city activity centers that offer options similar to this.

In Conclusion....

Try not to get caught in the web of many of the gyms out there. If this is your first gym, you should probably look for one that offers contract free or limited enrollment packages. These give you the opportunity to get out if the gym is not for you. Remember that most people who join a gym do not stick with it. Make sure it is for you before you spend your hard earned cash.
