Most people who have more then a small amount of weight to lose are not successful because they cannot stick with a diet plan for the long haul. If they are able to join a good support group, their odds of winning the battle of the bulge skyrocket! Whether it means having a pal to call if you feel the urge to cheat, or a girlfriend to huff it around the block with, joining a weight loss support group can pay off!

There are several types of support groups that you might like to consider.
First there is Overeaters Anonymous. This is a group for people who have admitted that they have an eating disorder. You will have people you can call day or night if you feel you might slip. You will also be taught to work the 12 step program which has been adapted from AA. There are frequent meetings that you can attend as you feel the need. Many cities have more then one chapter that meets in different areas of the city and between them all, you can find a meeting any day of the week. This group treats the eating problem as if it is a life long illness. You will not be asked to follow any certain diet, although many are on weight loss plans. Eating habits are discussed, individual foods are not. The group is totally anonymous( you go only by your 1st name) and there is no cost.
They do have valuable literature available to buy, or borrow and they do take up donations(dues) but you can come even if you cannot pay. People from all walks of life are welcome.

Another type of support group is the Weight Watchers variety. There are many for profit weight loss companies that offer support groups as part of their services. Usually you will attend once a week for a weigh in and a meeting. The downfall is that most of the women are not there to form relationships, but rather to strictly lose weight. Most of the time bonds are not formed that allow you to call on one of the other members day or night. It does motivate one to not cheat if they know they have to come before a group of strangers and have their results be a weight GAIN. You are not required to share the info, but still, people do not want to pay to attend if they are not going to try to succeed.

There have been many church based groups springing up over the past several years. They often partner off, pray for each other, share their results, and participate in a Bible study relevant to taking care of one's self. They have a high rate of success, and in this setting new friendships are often formed, which is an added benefit! The goal is not losing weight, but taking better nutritional care of your self, and also nourishing your spirit. As an added bonus, weight loss usually begins to occur!

Another type of support group I will cover is one that is made up of friends. It is usually formed by gal pals that just cannot do it alone. It can be very structured, or very informal. Often friends will meet to exercise and hold each other accountable to keeping it up. They will agree to call each other any time you feel that you may slip. This often is very affective because you are fighting the battle of the bulge together!

I feel that finding some good support is key to your weight loss success. One tip for a mixed sex group is for the girls to be sure that they do not get discouraged because men lose faster then ladies. Remember, there is strength in numbers!
