you have to want to quit

Jun 27 '00

I was a smoker for 10 years that is not a long time but I did smoke 2 packs a day. One day about 5 years ago I told my husband I wanted to quit.
I had one pack of cigarettes left and decided that would be my last pack. I figured I could smoke them all at night and start to quit in the morning well by the next morning I still had some left so i threw them away.
I was on my way to being a non-smoker. I got through the first few hours because I did not smoke at work. After work i repeated to myself I do not smoke any more. This seemed to help me. I found placing a small straw in my mouth helped with the physical symptoms of wanting to have something in my mouth. I held the straw like a cigarette and I drew on the straw as if i was smoking a cigarette. Every time I wanted a cigarette i placed a straw in my mouth. It does sound silly now but believe me it truly helped.
I was lucky to have few headaches do not think I was as irritable as people thought I would be.
I think it took me about 2 weeks before I could give up the raw. After that i did fine. I still have a craving sometimes to smoke but because I would not want to have to go through quitting again I do not even try.
I think if someone wants to quit they can do it might take outside help such as the patch or a prescription but to me the most important thing needed is the desire to quit.
