Make the right decision!

Jul 02 '00

As an ex-smoker this subject is near and dear to my heart. I really sympathize with others trying to quit because there is no easy way. You can read all the hints and tips you want, but nothing will succeed better than your own will to quit.

First you must get over the feeling you like smoking too much to be able to kick the habit. Guess what... every smoker feels the same. During my many failed attempts at giving up the weed, it occurred to me the main reason I wasn't successful was my lack of dedication. I wanted to stop for all the right reasons but mainly due to the complaints from my family plus the inconvenience of not being able to take a puff whenever and wherever I wanted. Unfortunately these are reasons to quit but not necessarily the right ones.

A good first step is understanding the need to make the decision to opt for a healthier lifestyle. Than when you're ready, pick a time where you will not be under stress or surrounded by other smokers. Perhaps like myself you might find a vacation is the best time to give it a try. You are more relaxed and hopefully have many things to fill your agenda to keep your mind off smoking.

Once you've elected to quit - because you want to - and not to satisfy the wishes of others, it's important to set the time you will begin the process of breaking your habit. Smoking is a double edged sword, you need to conquer not only the addiction but also the habit. Personally I found using one of the nicotine substitutes such as Nicorette gum very helpful. Although some individuals object to the taste and or having to chew continuously I thought the gum was far superior to the patch in controlling the desire for nicotine.

While I realize there are those that have quit without the use of an aid such as the patch, I couldn't have done it on my own. Consider every previous failure to be a learning experience so don't give up. If you've tried something and failed, give yourself a break and then try again another time. Most importantly keep in mind you are doing this for yourself!
